Breakthrough Update: Quantum Dot LEDs Get Big Efficiency Upgrade

As Popular Mechanics reported last fall, the light bulb wars are on. The government-mandated phase-out of old-fashioned incandescent light bulbs is upcoming, but plenty of people aren't happy with the replacements such as LEDs.

One problem with LEDs is they haven't produced light that's white enough for general use. But several years ago, researchers at Vanderbilt University led by Sandra Rosenthal invented a way to create much whiter light through the use of quantum dotsâ€"tiny semiconductor crystals. It got them a Popular Mechanics Brea kthrough Award.

The issue with Rosenthal's system was inefficiency. When the team first devised the quantum dot solution, its efficiency was only 3 percent. But now, the researchers are back in the news because they figured out a way to make the quantum dot LEDs 45 percent efficient. Read more about it here.
